Smite Items Guide

Latest posts by Aaron Stevens (see all)

One of the most essential aspects of Smite’s gameplay is items. Items significantly increase your stats and provide effects that will help you win the match. I’ve extensively used every single item in the game in my countless hours of playing Smite, and I find choosing the right items for the situation to be the most fun aspect of it.

Bottom Line up Front

There are a lot of items in this game, and it’s crucial to know a little bit about how each one functions. I’ll briefly go over every single item in the game so that you know what tools are available to you and what you will be up against.

Consumable Items

Consumable
Consumable Items from Aaron Stevens

Consumable items in Smite are items that have limited uses.

  • Baba’s Brew
  • Healing Potion
  • Mana Potion
  • Multi Potion
  • Ward
  • Hand of the Gods
  • Sentry Ward
  • Baron’s Brew
  • Chalice of Healing
  • Chalice of Mana
  • Chalice of the Oracle
  • Potion of Power
  • Elixir of Defense
  • Elixir of Power

Most consumable items are single-use, but the Chalices and Baron’s Brew have three charges that refill whenever entering the fountain.

Potions are primarily used to restore health and mana, and the Potion of Power provides a buff. Wards are used to see what’s happening in parts of the map that you’re not at. Hand of Gods do damage against jungle camps, allowing you to clear camps quicker for a cost. Elixirs provide powerful late-game buffs. Baba’s Brew is specific to Baba Yaga and is used as a damage-dealing ability.

Consumable items are often overlooked in mid-level play since their effects aren’t as potent or immediate as other items. In particular, potions can provide much-needed sustain, and wards are absolutely necessary to track the enemy team.

Relics

Relics are items with powerful but temporary effects that can be activated once every two to three minutes. They function much like an ability, going into cooldown after use.

Vision Shard

You start with this relic, and it places a ward when activated. You can replace this relic with another relic at level 12.

Bluestone Brooch increases the additional ability damage by a percentage of the enemy’s health, while Corrupted Bluestone debuffs the enemy’s attack speed. You also gain a buff, increasing attack speed and protections, for every enemy debuffed by Corrupted Bluestone.

FAQs

Question: Are there bad items?

Answer: I certainly don’t think so. They all have situations where they’re helpful. There will likely be items that you don’t like very much, but still want to use in specific situations.

Question: Are some items just better than others?

Answer: Kind of. Some items will consistently perform better than others based on the meta. For example, if everyone is using Spectral Armor, items that increase penetration are going to be more helpful than items that give you critical hit chance. What’s most important to consider is what will help you in your current scenario. An item that people say is overpowered can be completely useless in the wrong situation.

Question: Are glyphs overpowered?

Answer: On paper, yes. In practice, no. Glyphs are essentially tier four upgrades, or in other words, additional upgrades beyond the previous tier three limit. Luckily, the items chosen to have glyphs either didn’t previously have or need passive effects, were severely underused, or are already really expensive. I often get Breastplate of Valor and just completely forget to get one of the glyphs because it’s more important for me to get the next item in my build. The Executioner and Magi’s Cloak just got glyphs and I still rarely see them get used. Deathbringer and the Rod of Tahuti are so ridiculously expensive as it is that most matches will end before anyone can justify getting the glyphs.

Smite Items: Conclusion

This brief guide on every single item currently in the game should leave you familiar with all that you can encounter. This is just scratching the surface though. There’s a lot more to learn about each one, and the best way to do so is by using them in-game. I recommend trying out as many items as you can, especially the ones that you see getting used often.
