Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person hero shooter game by Blizzard. Two teams of six players fight for the map’s objective within a limited amount of time, either a king-of-the-hill style of gameplay or push the payload. Blizzard released the game on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in May 2016, followed by a release of the Nintendo Switch version in October 2019.
History and Development
Blizzard initially was supposed to be an MMO due to the studio’s specialization in MMO games. However, the developers gained enough experience creating a shooter game while working on their supposedly new IP (intellectual property) called Project Titan.
In May 2013, Blizzard decided to cancel the game entirely and use the assets to create a new game, Overwatch. At the 2014 Blizzcon event, Blizzard unveiled their latest game, Overwatch which they eventually released in Closed Beta from late 2015 until early 2016. Critics and players praised the game for its character’s diversity, cartoonish art style, and quite seemingly addictive gameplay.
Almost six years since its release, Overwatch is getting a sequel called Overwatch 2 that features an extensive PVE (player versus environment) co-operative campaign which explores the plot and lore of Overwatch. Blizzard also implemented changes to the gameplay,
Plot
Overwatch is set in a futuristic Earth, sixty years into the future. Thirty years before Overwatch took place, an “Omnic Crisis” began. The Omnic crisis is when omnium, an automated facility, began producing lethal and hostile robots which turned against humans. This event caused the formation of the Overwatch, an international task force, a United Nations-assigned team to combat the Omnic threats.
Two veterans, Gabriel Reyes, and Jack Morrison are in charge of overwatch. However, a rift formed between both the leaders, in which Morrison became the true leader of Overwatch while Reyes became the leader of a covert operations division called the Blackwatch.
Morrison and Reyes’ beef intensified even more when several allegations of wrongdoings and failures prompted the United Nations to investigate. An explosion destroyed the Overwatch’s headquarters, which supposedly killed Morrison and Reyes. This event forced the UN to pass the Petras Act, dismantling Overwatch.
Without Overwatch, corporations took over, and terrorism broke out in multiple parts of the world. With the recent signs of a second coming of the Omnic Crisis, former Overwatch members decide to reform Overwatch without the UN’s permission. Overwatch soon discovered that Reyes was alive and is now known as Soldier: 76, while Reyes joined a criminal organization called Talon and became Reaper.
Gameplay
The gameplay is similar to Quake and other fast-paced action shooter games. The difference is that each hero you choose has specific abilities that can either change the tide of battle or work against your team.
There are different game modes within the game, such as Assault, Control, Escort, Hybrid, Push, and Capture the Flag. There are also other game modes such as Deathmatch, Elimination, and even community-made ones.
Mechanics
Roles
Blizzard initially released Overwatch with four roles; Tanks, Offense, Defense, and Supports. However, Blizzard combined the Offense and Defense roles into one called Damage.
- Tanks– These heroes specialize in being the team’s front line and protecting allies while they deal damage. They have an immensely high amount of survivability and abilities that provide protection to themselves or their allies, such as shields and CC (crowd control.)
- Damage– These heroes are responsible for wearing down the enemy tanks until the entire team can push through and win the fight. They have various abilities and playstyles; hence this is one of the most sought-after roles in-game.
- Supports– Support heroes are responsible for providing heals, buffs, and other valuable utilities during team fights. They increase the team’s survivability and damage. The one downside of being a support player is that they are at their worst when enemies confront them in a 1v1 duel.
Shields and Barriers
Shields and barriers protect you from enemy damage; however, a few attacks don’t protect you from shields. These attacks include melee attacks such as Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer, Torbjörn’s melee attack with the forge hammer, and even regular melee attacks (every hero has one).
Winston’s Tesla Cannon will damage and lower the shield’s hitpoints and damage the enemy behind it. Shields can regenerate for a few points per second. There is a unique indicator beside your HP bar that lets you see the health of your shield. The regeneration begins once you stop taking damage for three seconds.
Barriers, on the other hand, do not reduce the enemies’ damage, and they do not regenerate. Zarya’s barrier and Lucio’s ultimate ability, the Sound Barrier, are two notable barrier skills. They absorb the entire damage that you take, and these barriers have a limited amount of time before disappearing.
Armor
A few heroes have default armor to their HP bar (denoted by the yellow boxes in the HP bar.) Armor reduces damages that enemies inflict on you by half; however if the damage exceeds ten or more, the protection caps at five damage. Brigitte’s ultimate, Rally, will provide armor to her allies within the AOE (Area of Effect).
The only heroes with natural armor are Bastion, Brigitte, D.Va (Mech mode), Orisa, Reinhardt, Winston, and Wrecking Ball.
Damage Amplification
Damage amplification is as straightforward as the name; it boosts your hero’s damage to a specific percentage. Here are some of the skills that increase your damage/amplify the damage that the enemy takes.
- Ana’s ultimate ability, Nano Boost, provides +50% if applied to your hero.
- Baptiste‘s ultimate ability, Amplification Matrix, provides +100% damage if you shoot through the window that Baptiste builds.
- Mercy’s Caduceus Staff (Right Click) boosts the damage of the hero by +30%
- Orisa’s ultimate ability, Supercharger, grants a +50% damage increase to all heroes within a particular AOE of the ability.
- Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord, Zenyatta will apply an orb to an enemy (the indicator is visible through walls) that debuffs them and amplifies their damage taken.
Headshots
Headshots are a recurring mechanic in shooter games. Headshots multiply your damage by 2x, meaning that if you do 50 damage to the body, then your headshot damage would be 100.
The only exception to this rule is Symmetra, Winston, who cannot do headshots, while Widowmaker has a headshot multiplier of 2.5x. Headshots are distinguishable with their “Ding” sound effect and an X around your crosshair.
Hit Points
Hit Points are your hero’s health pool. If it goes down to zero, you die. Each character has a different health pool and depends on the character’s role. Tanks usually have a higher health pool, while supports and damage roles have a lower health pool.
Healing and Health Packs
Healing abilities are primarily exclusive to supports, except Roadhog (Self Heal) and Soldier 76. If you receive healing, it has a specific order depending on the type of hit points.
- Health (White)
- Armor (Yellow)
- Shield (Can generate itself while a support hero heals you)
Health packs, on the other hand, are found throughout the map. You can pick any of these up if you’ve taken damage, and once you pick up these health packs, they take a few seconds before they will respawn again. These health packs cleanse any DoT (damage over time) on your heroes, such as Ana’s Biotic Rifle, Ash’s Dynamite, and Widowmaker’s Venom Mine. There are two sizes of health packs; small and large.
- Small health packs restore 75 HP, and they respawn after 10 seconds.
- Large health packs restore 250 HP, and they respawn after 15 seconds.
Ultimate Abilities
Ultimate abilities are powerful game-changing abilities that players must charge before using them. A yellow circle indicates the ultimate ability charge. Players gradually earn an ult charge every five seconds and can hasten their ult charge by dealing damage or by healing.
Some heroes have a higher ultimate cost. This aspect means that you need more time to generate the ultimate; however, this does not equate to these heroes being late to the ult pop party as this is still highly dependent on the ult generation (DPS and healing).
In-Game Objectives
Assault
Assault is a game mode in which there’s one attacking team and one is defending. The attacking team must capture two points, pushing the defending team off the point. The defending team is responsible for fending off the attacking team until the time runs out. The timer will increase once the attacking team captures one point.
Overtime will trigger if the timer runs out while the attacking team is still touching the point. The overtime timer will not go down as long as they are on the point. Both teams will take turns as the attacking and defending teams for the competitive version of this game mode.

Control
Control is the king-of-the-hill style of mode in Overwatch. Both teams will be fighting each other to take over a single point. Once a team takes a point, they will need to defend their control until it reaches 100%. The overtime timer will trigger if one team reaches 99% while a hero in the enemy team contests them.
More teammates in the point will increase the capture speed; however, only up to three teammates will speed up the capturing of the point. The competitive version of the game mode is similar to the quick-play game mode.

Escort
In the escort game mode, an attacking team will escort a payload to a delivery point while the defending team tries to prevent them from pushing the payload. There are two to three checkpoints per map before the final delivery point, and each time the payload reaches these checkpoints, the timer will increase and move both teams to their new respective pawning locations.
The overtime will trigger once a hero in the attacking team contests and is near the payload. The competitive version of this game mode swaps both teams, and the objective is to get the payload further than the enemy team.

Hybrid
Hybrid mode is a combination between assault and capture. An attacking team needs to capture the point, and after successfully doing so, the attacking team will escort the payload to the delivery point. The competitive version of this game mode swaps both teams with a similar objective to the escort mode.

FAQs
Question: How Hard Is It To Learn Overwatch?
Answer: Depending on what level you want to compete in, Overwatch can be accessible if you’re playing the game casually. Still, if you’re going to take your game to the next level, you have to learn the ins and outs of every hero, team composition, hero-counters, best maps to play a specific hero, etc. Overall, it’s an easy-to-pick-up game with a high skill ceiling.
Question: Is Overwatch Free?
Answer: Overwatch, unfortunately, is not free. You need to pay to have access to the game, and there are even skins that you can buy using real money; however, these skins are primarily within the Overwatch League, and as of writing, you can earn League Tokens for free if you tune in to the OWL weekly games. As a bonus, Blizzard decided that everyone who owns Overwatch 1 will get a free upgrade to Overwatch 2’s PVP mode.
Question: How To Get Good In Overwatch?
Answer: If you want to get good at Overwatch, here are a few tips that I can give you.
I highly suggest getting a “main” hero if you’re starting in Overwatch. A main hero is someone you would use every time you get into a match. This technique allows you to know the ins and outs of the hero, what you should prioritize in a game, and practice your decision-making skills as you will be familiar with the hero’s cooldowns and kit.
Study the map. Fortunately, you can dive into any map in Overwatch with its custom game mode. You should study the passages you should take, where you should position on a particular map, and lastly, where the health packs are.
Review your VODS (Match Replays). This technique is an effective way of knowing what mistakes you made during a match, what you could have done better, and what you should have done at that moment. There are many educational videos about Overwatch with Youtubers, such as Flats, ML7, KarQ, etc.
Overwatch Overview: Conclusion
Overwatch is a fun PVP game with a high learning curve. There are many micro and macro things to look out for if you’re playing this game competitively, but regardless, it is an excellent game with many dedicated players over its seven-year run.
